Metals Building

The Metals Building at Olds College was originally built in 1964. Over the years it has served to fill the training needs of thousands of students in first, second, and third year welding apprenticeship training, full-time program studies, continuing education outreach programming, and as a Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) testing and certification centre serving employers and employees in the industry.

The building today includes:

  • three fully equipped welding shops with 15 booths in each shop
  • one basic machine shop with 12 lathes
  • one milling machine
  • a 4’x4’ plasma table
  • various drills and other tooling
  • one general fabrication/grinding/steel storage area, including processing equipment

Building Renovations

In 2012 an extensive renovation was completed on two of the three welding shops. This included installing 15 larger booths for students with in booth access to all equipment needed for most standard welding processes including Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Flux-cored Arc Welding, Metal Cored Arc Welding, and Oxy Acetylene cutting.

The renovation saw the installation of a new overhead ventilation system in which each booth was given its own perimeter ventilation system that allows the student to weld in a clean air atmosphere. All grinding operations were moved out of the welding bays to the rear shop where seven grinding booths were installed along with three pipe beveling booths for processing pipe. The grinding booth relocation resulted in a more safe student atmosphere in the welding shops by reducing noise and grinding debris.

Over the summer and fall of 2017 a complete front end renovation was completed that saw virtually no areas of the building untouched, starting with new flooring, ceilings and lighting, new furniture in each classroom and office, and a new heating and cooling air makeup system and windows to ensure that the building is comfortable at all times. Renovations included upgrades to hallways, offices, classrooms, and installing state of the art washrooms and change room facilities.

Following these past few years of renovation the Metals Building at Olds College is ready to serve the needs of industry and students for years to come, in bright open learning spaces, using state of the art technology and programming.
