Disease Presence in Relation to Soil Characteristic

disease-scouting.jpeg

Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) is performing intensive one-acre grid scouting for the purpose of identifying disease variability within a field, and comparing the distribution of disease results to other geospatial layers collected within the HyperLayer project. In collaboration with xarvio Digital Farming Solutions, powered by BASF, OCCI completed disease identification of stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis), tan spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis), and speckled leaf blotch/septoria nodorum leaf blotch (Zymoseptoria tritici/Parastagonospora nodorum) on 1,032 wheat leaves throughout Field 15/16 on the Smart Farm during the 2022 growing season. During the 2023 growing season, researchers completed similar disease identification for barley. The results added to the data layers within the HyperLayer project.

  • Completed disease identification for 1,032 leaf samples and 325 severity assessments to display wheat disease distribution within the field and provide a comparison of disease presence to site specific soil characteristics.
