Meet Ashley – a student in the Land Agent Program

by Meagan on November 9, 2010

Greetings Everyone!

Thanks for checking out our Student Blog! We’re really excited to share with you what’s happening here at Olds College. This week we will get to know another one of the Student Ambassadors who works with the Student Recruitment Department.

Student Ambassador - Ashley

Student Ambassador - Ashley

Ashley Clipperton comes to us from outside of Cochrane, Alberta where she grew up and attended Cochrane High. During her high school years she was on both the Cochrane High and Cochrane Eagles track and field teams. Cochrane High are provincial champions in track and field. Ashley competed in various events such as the 4 x 100m, 4 x 400m, 400m, 800m, and triple jump. Her involvement in track and field gave her several opportunities to travel to different places including Regina, Florida, and the Bahamas. Ashley was also in involved with the Youth Singers of Calgary for 8 years where she sang, danced, and acted. This too gave her the opportunity to travel more of the world where she went to California and several parts of Europe.

Ashley is currently in her first year of the Land Agent program here at Olds College. She wanted to become a land agent because she wanted a job that incorporates office work and field work. Ashley’s friend’s mom is a land administrator and mentioned the idea of becoming a land agent, as it is a social job and Ashley enjoys being social and meeting new people. She then researched into the job, which led her to the Olds College website. When asked about why she chose the Land Agent program at Olds she says that the College offers one of the best Land Agent programs around, plus she enjoys the benefits of smaller class sizes, the hands on learning, and the fact that it is close to home.

After her two years in the program, Ashley is required to complete 12 consecutive months in the field and then is able to apply for her Land Agent license. She may take a month off to travel, perhaps to Australia, before she commences her 12 month work period. After her diploma is competed she may transfer to another university to pursue her degree in management or environmental sciences. In 5 years time she sees herself working and traveling within Canada.

Not only is Ashley a student and a Student Ambassador, but she is also a Residence Assistant in Frank Grisdale Hall here on campus and holds a job at a local restaurant in town. She loves being social and keeping herself busy.

Ashley wanted to become a Student Ambassador at Olds College for several reasons. First, she enjoys being involved in the community, whether it is back home in Cochrane or here on campus, and wanted to continue that involvement. Second, she says that being involved makes your experience at places worthwhile, it makes your time here that much fuller. Third, she likes getting to know people from the different parts of campus and not just dealing with people in Residence.

Ashley’s favourite foods are steak, pasta, and mushroom. Her least favourite food is gravy. Her favourite place in the world that she has been to is the Bahamas, and she would love to travel to Brazil or Africa one day. Ashley’s hobbies include homework (like most students), going to the gym, visiting the mountains whenever she has the chance, and riding friend’s horses.

Well that’s it for this week. Check out the blog next week to meet another amazing Student Ambassador!

My thoughts and deepest prayers go out to the Baier family and friends and fellow students at Olds College during this time.
Cheers,
Meagan Beattie
