The Olds College Compost Technology Centre is teaming up with the Compost Council of Canada to host the Compost Garden Party, a free concert promoting compost and vegetable gardening this Saturday, July 24th at 2:00 pm. The concert will take place at the Centennial Park Gazebo in Uptowne Olds.

Toronto-based folk-pop act Jane’s Party will be playing as part of an effort to bring heightened awareness to the benefits of composting technology. Sample bags of soil nutrient-rich compost will be provided by the Olds College Compost Technology Centre and a variety of information on composting will be available.

The event has also been created to bring awareness to the Plant a Row, Grow a Row program where compost users and all gardeners in general are encouraged to grow a row of their favourite vegetable for themselves and another one for donation to their local food bank.

“Compost is the essence of our soil’s vitality and our ‘rot and roll’ Compost Garden Party is a way to recognize its value within our community and food-gardening initiatives,” said Shirley Lupino, Compost Technician, Olds College Composting Technology Centre. “We look forward to welcoming everyone to a great afternoon of fun and terrific music.”

The Olds College Compost Technology Centre has been in operation for 15 years and is the primary destination of all compostable materials collected by the green bin programs in the towns of Olds, Sundre and Didsbury. The Centre has also been involved in groundbreaking research with the Olds College School of Innovation, leading to new methods for recovering resources from many areas of industry. Besides drastically reducing the amount of landfill generated, composting provides a source of fresh, vital nutrients and organic matter that promotes plant growth.
