Summary of essential job functions
The Ministry of Agriculture is looking for 2 students who would be interested in working in the Swift Current area this summer. A typical day at this job may include checking and repairs/ maintenance of an extensive mechanical watering system by ATV. Our candidate of choice will have working knowledge of mechanical watering systems as well as livestock handling facilities and equipment, so that maintenance and repair work can be done as required. Knowledge of livestock handling and care would be considered a definite asset. The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, is also required.

Abilities required
- General repair skills for water pumps, troughs and livestock equipment;
- A valid class 5 driver’s license; ability to operate an ATV.
- Excellent organizational skills; and
- Effective written and verbal communication.

The Horse Driver will also be responsible for all aspects of horse handling, training, hitching and driving for designated activities and for the purpose of serving Fort Steele Heritage Town visitors. Additionally the Horse Driver manager will be required to provide support to the livestock department.
Successful candidates will have:
• Experience working with horses and livestock in a ranching environment.
• At least 3 years’ experience working with horses/livestock
• Extensive experience working with horses as a handler, trainer and driver.
• At least 3 years’ experience team driving of work horses in both wagon and sleigh with two, four and six team rigs preferably in a public setting.
• Class 5 driver’s license, experienced in hauling livestock trailer and transporting livestock
• Experience working in a non- profit environment sector an asset
• Genuine interest in heritage aspects of animal husbandry
• Good communication skills and ability to work well with others

The Livestock Assistant will be responsible for providing the Livestock Manager with assistance in all areas of the day to day operations, care, and maintenance of all livestock as designated by the Friends of Fort Steele. The Livestock Assistant will also be responsible for assisting the manager with horse handling and hitching of teams and driving for designated activities and for the purpose of serving Fort Steele Heritage Town visitors.

Successful candidates will have:
• Post-secondary certification in animal science or agriculture or equivalent experience working in a livestock, ranching environment
• At least 2 years’ experience working with livestock
• Extensive experience working with horses as a handler, trainer and driver.
• Computer proficiency in a Windows environment
• Class 5 Drivers License
• Good communication skills and ability to work well with others

Requirements:

More About This Position:
This is a 3 month non paid position. The hours are between 3 to 10 a week depending on work load. We are flexible and can accommodate most schedules.
