Olds College hosted the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment & Sustainable Development for a campus tour today. Guests included dignitaries from as far as Vancouver and Quebec who were here to learn about our Botanic Gardens & Treatment Wetlands. The tour was led by Dr. Abimbola Abiola, Director Applied Research & Lead Scientist and Ken Risi, Director of Development.
The Standing Committee is currently undergoing a study in order to give the Minister of the Environment recommendations regarding the development of a National Conservation Plan. As part of the study, the Committee will be travelling across Canada in May 2012 to visit sites where conservation activities are occurring and to speak with interested stakeholders. The Committee was very interested in visiting Olds College, and specifically its Wetlands Research and Development Program.
As the world’s native wetlands are being lost at an alarming rate through rapid industrial, agricultural and municipal growth, the environment’s ability to store and purify water has been compromised resulting in water shortages and contamination. Olds College Centre for Innovation is pursuing research and strategies through a water research centre to develop effective and sustainable methods to conserve, manage and protect water supplies. This development of a treatment wetlands and botanic gardens project will also provide information on the impacts of developed wetlands on biodiversity and ecological health.
